For the 20th straight year volunteers from Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis are helping build with Twin Cities Habitat. The home they're working on this year is on 5th Avenue in South Minneapolis. Just three days into their work camp week and they're already putting up the roof trusses.
Bonnie Herr, who helps organize volunteers at Plymouth, says her congregation estimates they've helped build 50 homes with Habitat over the years. That includes some their volunteers have worked on in other parts of the country and in other countries around the world. The congregation also takes part in A Brush with Kindness repair projects. Over the years, Plymouth Congregational Church has donated nearly $300,000 to support Habitat's mission of eliminating poverty housing in the Twin Cities.
A few of the volunteers on site this day had been doing this for 18 years. Ann Cole has been helping out with food for the Plymouth volunteers for 15 years (that's Bonnie and Ann in the picture).
Bonnie says Habitat is a great way to get younger members of the congregation involved. They are making a concrete improvement in their community. "You don't need any special skills. You just come and learn and dig right in."
Later this summer, volunteers from the Thrivent Builds with Habitat partnership will be working on this home as well.
Twin Cities Habitat is always looking to partner with communities of faith that are interested in putting their beliefs into action.
