Volunteers from the ecumenical group Holy Hammers have been building homes with Twin Cities Habitat since 1999. And now they're at it again. Right after Easter, the first crew began construction on a home at on Edmund Avenue in St. Paul. The workers already have the exterior and interior walls up for the first floor of the home.
Holy Hammers is a collection of 13 Twin Cities congregations that come together to work towards eliminating poverty housing with Habitat. Their volunteers have been a part of more than two dozen Habitat projects over the years.
This latest Holy Hammers home on Edmund Avenue is part of Twin Cities Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI). The idea is to work with as many local partners as possible (businesses, faith-based groups, neighborhood groups, schools, local leaders, families, etc.) to address the multiple needs of the community. Habitat will be doing a number of new builds, rehabs and repair projects in each of its three NRI neighborhoods over the coming years. These neighborhoods are in North Minneapolis, on St. Paul's East Side and the Central Corridor area - which is where this home on Edmund Avenue is.
