Kayoua Yang

Family connection is a very important aspect of the Hmong culture, and Kayoua has always wanted a safe home and a good neighborhood where her children can grow up. More than anything Kayoua believes that "family comes first," and with that comes "safety and stability." For over 12 years now, Kayoua has worked as a full-time employee at U.S. Bank. She works hard to save money and provide for her family. "Saving money is the biggest thing I’m trying to do – that’s why I came to Habitat."

Kayoua applied to be a Habitat homeowner last November. At the time, she never thought she’d be part of such a monumental event in Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity history. "I never even dreamed of being a part of the Carter Work Project. I just thought, what will I do if I don’t qualify? You just never know about the future."

When Kayoua found out she had been matched to a Jimmy Carter home, she was elated. "I just couldn’t believe it. I kept saying ‘I’m so lucky! I’m just so happy!’ When I found out I was chosen I called everyone I knew."

And for Kayoua Yang, her two children, and nephew, the future is promising.

For Kayoua, it felt good to know she had achieved her goal. She’s excited about her beautiful new home, and more than ready to upgrade from a small, two bedroom house to a more spacious three bedroom. Her kids will love the extra room to run around, she says. "We’ll go to the zoo and we’ll go to the playground. We’re looking forward to meeting new neighbors and exploring a new place."

Kayoua is thrilled to learn more about homeownership, and she’s ready to start volunteering. "I’ve told lots of people to apply – my family and my friends. It’s been a good thing for me. It’s a great program that helps people who can’t afford a good home."

Kayoua couldn’t be more grateful for the Habitat Homeownership program and its ability to help her fulfill her dreams. And though she’s already achieved so much, she’s started planning for the future.

"Once I’m in my new, safe home, I believe I can save money. Then, I know I can send my children to college one day."
