World Habitat Day Marks First Day of Building for Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project

MINNEAPOLIS – Oct. 3, 2010

Monday, October 4 marks World Habitat Day 2010, an annual day designated by the United Nations to draw attention to the state of our communities and the basic right to adequate shelter. Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity will recognize World Habitat Day by bringing together hundreds of volunteers from local corporations, congregations and community organizations for the first day of the 27th annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

Local elected officials and advocates will join Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity on the St. Paul site of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project to call for increased investment in affordable housing solutions. A press conference will be held October 4 at 10:00 a.m. featuring former Vice President Walter Mondale, former Congressman Jim Ramstad, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Congressman Keith Ellison and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. A tour will also be given of the St. Paul construction site where Twin Cities Habitat is renovating seven homes, building three new houses, and rehabbing four foreclosed houses as a part of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

World Habitat Day calls on all people to advocate for adequate housing for all. This year, the event will focus on the need for neighborhood revitalization, a core component of the work of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project will add momentum to this work by bringing increased investment and attention on North Minneapolis and the East Side of St. Paul.
