Women Build 2012 North Minneapolis home week 5
The news of the week was the weather - ranging from intense heat to drenching rain with thunder and lightning. On the day I visited I sat in my car...
At the end of the third week of building, the house and garage are taking shape. The site supervisor, Terra, reports that the second floor walls are up and all the interior walls are in place. The garage is growing up from its concrete floor as well.
Friday’s team leader, Laura Szukics, is a speech therapist at a school on the south side of Minneapolis. She had seen Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH) houses go up in the neighborhood and children from those homes attend her school. When she spoke with Women Build Committee Member Brenda Foster at a booth at a Women’s Convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Laura made up her mind to take action.
She contacted family members, co-workers, people from her Mom’s club, and friends from high school. One high school friend came all the way from Kansas to participate. Many of the volunteers also participated in a “Thirty-One Gifts party” where they made $350 to donate. The 31 consultant, Carissa Sullivan, donated all of her profits from the party to TCHFH. The rest of Team Hope’s pledge was raised through their Friends Asking Friends fundraising page.
It’s another inspiring story of how Women Build brings women together and engages them in the work of Habitat for Humanity. Laura took a leadership role in recruiting a group of enthusiastic volunteers who are proud of their accomplishments, working hard despite the heat.
Costco provided lunch on Friday. Other lunch providers for the week included Seema Maddali on Monday, Allyson Knudsen who led a team from Wells Fargo on Tuesday, Andrea Larson and Jamie Isom who led a team from Medtronic on Wednesday, and Cristen Incitti who led a team form Miss MN (Women who participated in a TCHFH Global Village trip to Costa Rica) on Thursday.
