Women Build 2011 West St. Paul week 3

It is amazing what some sod can do! With the instant lawn that was laid last week (Anna wanted me to give a special shout-out to Thursday’s sod crew) Worki’s house on Deppe Street has come even closer to being ready for her and her family to make their own. I caught Worki on her lunch break and asked her how her sweat equity hours were coming along. With excitement, she told me that after working on a Minneapolis site the next day, her hours would be done! Plus, she had taken her final homebuyer class just a few days before. I congratulated her on her accomplishments and asked if her kids were excited (which, I’m sure, was a silly question). She explained that they were, but that she hadn’t been able to bring them to the house while it was open. So, they’d had to be content with peering excitedly through the windows.
After lunch, Worki went back to creating a clean border of the yet-to-be-poured driveway. I pictured her next summer, tending to the lawn (a brand-new, donated lawnmower was already waiting in the garage), her kids playing in the back yard or riding their bikes. I can’t wait for the dedication to celebrate with the whole family!
Special thanks to last week’s Team Leaders the Tommy Girls, and to Lunch Providers Jennifer Weiss, Barbara Eschle, Becca Kvasnik and Cecil’s Deli, and Xcel Energy.
The summer build on Deppe Street is officially over, but things are just getting started at our SECOND Women Build summer project in Columbia Heights! This is another “new build” and will run from August 29 through November 12. If you thought you missed your opportunity to volunteer on Women Build this year, think again! Or come back for a second round! Check out available dates on VolunteerHub. We need helping hands more than ever, and who doesn’t want to volunteer during the absolutely gorgeous fall weather? Be a Team Leader, Crew Leader, General Volunteer, Lunch Provider, or Site Host. Everyone plays a vital role, and another hard-working family is depending on us to help them achieve their dream of homeownership.
Are you looking to fill out your collection of past Women Build t-shirts? Get them while they last at the Habitat ReStore for only $5 each! The ReStore is located at 510 County Road D West in New Brighton.

Be well,
