Women Build 2011 West St. Paul home week 4
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” (Ghandi)
It was all about floors when I visited the Women Build volunteers on Saturday. This is detail work, folks, and it requires some serious measuring (twice), cutting (once), and probably some minor swearing. But it’s also very satisfying once it’s done, and it goes a long way toward making the house look even closer to being finished.
The biggest difference I saw, though, was the new lawn! A lush, green lawn in November – not bad. The sprinklers were doing their job, making sure it stays nice and green until it’s covered with the white stuff. Earlier in the week, the inside walls had been primed and painted. Larry was working his magic on the window and door trim, and some porch painting was going on as well. It seems like just yesterday that we were framing!
Both of the 2011 Women Build homes were dedicated on October 27th. Members of the youth group from Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan performed two songs from their production of “Makin’ Room,” a musical about Habitat for Humanity. The youths raised $1,200 in donations for Women Build at the musical’s two performances this summer. Allyson Knudsen, Women Build Co-Chair and Darlene Lewis, a city council member from West St. Paul, shared their thoughts about the Women Build program. Site supervisor Anna Morrison and Chief Operating Officer Mary Schumacher also congratulated the families and welcomed them to their new homes.
Just a couple more weeks to go -- don’t miss your chance to volunteer in Columbia Heights!
Be well,
Andrea Cole
