Women Build 2011 Columbia Heights home coming together

Women Build 2011 Columbia Heights home coming together

“Love is in the details?”
Walking through the Columbia Heights home this week, it struck me that this place is really a labor of love. If you take a little time to look at individual pieces of the build you find so many mini-projects that so many volunteers were a part of. One of rewarding parts of volunteering with Women Build is seeing the homeowners and their families in the finished work of love.

The side porch has many memories for me personally. Site supervisor, Anna, needed two four feet deep holes dug before the city inspector arrived. Very hot day, lots of laughing and cheerleading and tag-team digging and the city inspector looking over us as we finished digging the last few inches. I look fondly at the finished project, recalling the day of digging and knowing that it took a team of sister volunteers to complete it! I’m sure each of you has a story to tell about your mini-project within each build that is near and dear to you. Think of how this house has come together. Each of you showed up, worked diligently at the task that was assigned to you, trusting that the next volunteer would complete it with the same love and attention to detail that you started the project.
This week the trim work started and the kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities have been installed. We only have a few days left on the Columbia Heights build. If you have some free time next week there are a few more slots.

Huge thanks to all of our volunteers this week. There were many return volunteers and even some first-timers that showed up eager to learn. Now may be a great time to check your calendars and see if your group can commit to our 2012 Women Build in some capacity. Everyone that has been involved the past seven months has put together two beautiful homes. Share this experience with those that you love.
