What have I gotten out of AmeriCorps?

What have I gotten out of AmeriCorps?

Carolyn AmeriCorps Alum 2011When I first began my year of service as an AmeriCorps member I had no idea the magnitude of experiences I would encounter. There are so many situations that I have come across that I know will help me in my future career and life. I have learned valuable skills like problem solving, time management, flexibility, and communication.

One of the best aspects of my experience has been the number of people I encountered and served alongside. Facilitating volunteers has really taught me the importance of leadership and humility. It is easy to always be a leader or a follower, but my year has taught me the necessity of both positions. I also learned that many barriers can be broken down when people put aside their differences and work toward a common goal.

I have really learned what it means to be a part of an organization and how important it is to really believe in that organization’s mission. Serving as an AmeriCorps member has opened so many new doors for my future, and I am so thankful for that. Being an AmeriCorps member is something I know that I will always look back on and be proud of.
