In Larry Hossfeld’s nineteen plus years of volunteering generosity and compassion are two traits he has embodied throughout. Right before Christmas in 2007, Larry made the largest individual donation of that year in the form of a renovated, move-in ready house. Again in December of 2008, he contributed another home to Habitat located just half a mile from his first donation.
This past holiday season, Larry again went above-and-beyond the definition of generous. He contributed another home to Habitat in the same Richfield neighborhood. He completely remodeled the house by refreshing the main floor, updating the bathroom and kitchen, completely finishing the basement, and making many energy efficiency improvements including adding triple pane windows, additional insulation and high-efficiency appliances throughout.
“I just felt like there was some family out there that could use the home more than I could,” said Larry.
Hossfeld is an important member of the construction team, serving not just as a donor, but as an experienced construction volunteer as well. He enjoys teaching, and often focuses his volunteer efforts on helping train and mentor AmeriCorps members. A former engineer, Larry has been a consistent presence in the volunteer ranks since 1990. Since then, it’s been estimated he’s had a hand in more than 100 Habitat homes. In more recent years, Larry has focused his efforts on renovating some of his own properties that will someday become Habitat homes.
When asked what keeps bringing him back to Habitat, Larry said, “I do it because I know I’m accomplishing worthwhile things, and hopefully it will encourage others to be generous with whatever resources they have.”
