Soon 4,000 volunteers will gather in the Twin Cities for the 2024 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project! From September 29 to October 4, this weeklong homebuilding event will bring people (including hosts Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood) from near and far to The Heights development on the Greater East Side of St. Paul.
“To have the Carter Work Project come to St. Paul’s Greater East Side and jumpstart The Heights development is a significant honor,” said Chris Coleman, president and CEO of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. “We are proud to demonstrate our organization’s and Minnesota’s commitment to advancing racial equity through homeownership here in St. Paul with this historic development.”
Read on for a sneak peek of what's happening during the Carter Work Project, from the build site and beyond.
Opening Ceremony
On Sunday, we'll kick things off with the Opening Ceremony at Union Depot in St. Paul, and you're all invited! This high-energy event features the Minnesota Skol Line, live music from NUNNABOVE, and inspiring speakers. The event is from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 5:15 p.m.) and is free; registration is required.
Then, there's an Opening Ceremony after party that is open to the public! Head outside to the Union Depot Plaza from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. for food trucks, complimentary beer from Dual Citizen Brewing Company, and live music by The New Standards. No registration required.
Monday will officially kickoff the build week! From Monday to Friday, volunteers will start bright and early at The Heights. Along with Twin Cities Habitat site supervisors, staff from Habitat for Humanity International, and seasoned local volunteers, they will work on 30 homes.
The Heights, spanning 112-acres, is our largest development ever—and the future location of 147 Habitat homes. Volunteers during the Carter Work Project will help build the first homes on site, launching this historic project for the Greater East Side.
After the build day, we're hosting the...
Build Forward Bash!
Yep, we're throwing a party—and you're invited. Join us for the Build Forward Bash on Tuesday, October 1 at The Armory. This special celebration of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will be hosted by Jonathan Scott, Property Brothers co-host, entrepreneur, and Habitat Humanitarian.
The Family Stone and the MPLS Funk All Stars will provide live music for this unforgettable night. We'll also have a program to honor President Carter's 100th birthday and launch our Build Forward Together campaign. This fun 18+ event is free and open to the public. Bring your friends and family to celebrate with us! Registration is required, so get your tickets now.
Wednesday marks the halfway point of the week. After the build day, you're invited to attend a housing justice symposium presented by Habitat for Humanity International.
Racial Justice in Housing Symposium
This event brings together community members at the St. Paul Event Center for an evening of exploration, learning, and action. A dynamic panel discussion will explore the struggle for racial justice in housing and examine discriminatory policies that created systemic and structural barriers throughout history. Glenn Harris, President of Race Forward and publisher of Colorlines will guide a conversation about solutions that have demonstrably broken down these barriers, offering a clear path forward toward a more equitable future in the Twin Cities and beyond.
This is a free event and open to the public, but registration is required.

Closing Ceremony
The 2024 Carter Work Project will conclude with a closing ceremony at The Heights. During this celebration, Twin Cities Habitat will "pass the hammer" to the host of the 2025 Carter Work Project!
