I have to say I expected a much different trip in Nicaragua than my past trips in Costa Rica for Global Village. While Central American traditions are somewhat similar, I’m finding that Nicaragua has its own unique flavor and Esteli, its own history and charm.
However, our local families in Esteli, sadly, share the same struggles that are prevalent everywhere we work. In fact, Nicaragua has some of the most challenging housing issues anywhere in the western hemisphere. Despite that, I remain of the belief that we must at least take on the problem one family at a time. Each family’s circumstances vary but the need is the same. Someone’s life is changed every time we make the effort, perhaps now, but definitely in the future.
I’m constantly heartened by the diligence and enthusiasm of our team. I’ve worked with many of them over the years and they’re extremely dedicated and diligent people. But every year there are new and exciting people that accept the challenge and I’m privileged to meet them as well! They have become for me the people I take my inspiration from and help reinforce my belief that we must never stop to make our Habitat family’s lives better, one house at a time.
