Ways to Support Habitat this Summer - NOT swinging a hammer!
Summer can be busy, and not every Habitat supporter can spend a day volunteering on a Habitat build or home repair site. That's why we've put...
Kathy Christopherson is an inspiration. Outwardly she is strong, confident and generous. She is engaged in her community and committed to making a difference. Her personality and sense of purpose inspire people she meets, but it’s the recent turn in her life in which those who never meet her can find inspiration.
Kathy’s husband passed away a couple years ago, leaving her with a life she had not expected. After spending time grieving and accepting her loss, Kathy became determined to redefine herself as a single person. No longer part of a couple, Kathy wanted to chart a new, meaningful path for herself. As a long-time philanthropist, Kathy naturally sought meaning through nonprofit volunteerism.
It was at this point in Kathy’s journey that she was invited to the first ever Habitour for Builder's Circle members. Kathy has been a longtime donor to Habitat for Humanity, and this was a unique opportunity for her to experience first-hand the impact of Twin Cities Habitat. Much of the event was a bus tour that brought volunteers, staff and donors to various construction sites around the Twin Cities, many of which were being rehabbed and renovated by Habitat.
The Habitour provided Kathy with an enlightening experience that strengthened her bond with Habitat’s mission of providing decent, affordable shelter. She says, “The more I learned about Habitat, the more I believed in it.” Kathy relates to the philosophy of providing a hand up in life, rather than a hand out.
Now, in addition to graciously donating financially to Habitat, Kathy has become a dedicated volunteer. Last year she worked on the steering committee for the 2010 Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala. She has also participated in multiple build days, where she’s invited her friends and family to come out and volunteer.
Kathy’s impact on Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity is immense, but she too has also been strengthened by her commitment to the organization. She says, “Habitat came along at the right time.” As Kathy builds her new life, she remains involved with Habitat, keeping in touch with those she’s worked with during her volunteer experiences.
Jennifer Kahlow, a Habitat staff member who has enjoyed getting to know Kathy over time says, “Kathy inspires staff to do our job, inspires volunteers to step up to the plate, and inspires donors to give generously.”
