At Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, we're bringing people together to create, preserve, and promote affordable homeownership and advance racial equity in housing. Just last year, 139 families bought Habitat homes. And since our founding in 1985, more than 1,900 families have become Habitat homeowners!
The impact of homeownership can't be overstated. If you ask Habitat homeowners to describe what homeownership means to their families, they’ll probably say something like "transformational." But ask anyone who's been trying to buy a starter home on their own during the last few years, and they'll probably say it feels impossible. Skyrocketing rent means families can't save for a down payment, not to mention rising construction costs and home prices. We have a housing crisis here in the Twin Cities.
That's why Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity is publicly launching our Build Forward Together comprehensive campaign. Read on to learn more!
Our region's housing crisis affects everyone, but not equally. Things are even worse for families of color. Minnesota has one of the highest rates of homeownership in the nation, yet we have one of the widest racial disparities in homeownership, rooted in decades of systemic racism from redlining and racial covenants. And while these policies affected many people of color, they were intentionally designed to create barriers to homeownership for foundational Black households—those who are descendants of slavery in the U.S. and have been the primary targets of racist housing policies for generations.
At Twin Cities Habitat, we believe every family deserves a foundation to build a future on and a place to call home. We know that when we improve how we serve families and those most impacted by housing discrimination, our organization will be better and do better as we build forward together.
Twin Cities Habitat is determined to be part of the solution. We want to offer more families a way out of the impossible housing crisis and into transformational homeownership with Habitat. That’s what our new comprehensive campaign—Build Forward Together—is all about.
Here's what we're accomplishing through the Build Forward Together campaign:
Whether you’re new to Habitat, a long-time supporter, or somewhere in between, we need your involvement to build forward together. We couldn’t do this work without you, the generous Habitat community, including thousands of volunteers, donors, and advocates rolling up their sleeves and building forward together.
We still have a lot of work to do together to turn the tide on our housing crisis and racial disparities in homeownership. But momentum is on our side. As we officially launch this Build Forward Together campaign, we’re counting on you to join the movement. Invite your friends, families, and colleagues to join, too!
It’s up to you to decide how you want to participate in the Build Forward Together campaign.
Donate: You can give financially to help us reach our $80 million goal.
