Volunteer Organizes 50 Friends To Build Community For 50th birthday

Volunteer Organizes 50 Friends To Build Community For 50th birthday

This year, Judy Timmons is celebrating her 50th birthday a little different than most. Sure, there will be cake shared with friends and family, but there will also be hard hats and power tools. Judy is organizing 50 friends, family members, and Caribou Coffee co-workers to volunteer at two Twin Cities Habitat construction sites.

Judy, friends and coworkers

Judy“I knew I didn’t want to do something traditional to celebrate my 50th birthday,” Judy said. “I’ve always been passionate about housing and food issues so Habitat seemed like the perfect fit.”

Judy expected her announcement to celebrate her birthday by organizing a large scale Twin Cities Habitat volunteer project to go over well with friends. Yet, she did not expect how well.

“Everyone was thrilled to hear about the project,” Judy said. “People responded in a very generous and selfless manner.”

Volunteers at Robbinsdale RehabJudy and her team of volunteers will be working at Twin Cities Habitat home-build sites in Robbinsdale and Brooklyn Park.  Both construction sites are home rehabs with a wide variety of needed work. Duties include interior and exterior painting and installing sheetrock indoors and soffit and fascia on the garage.

Volunteers groups are essential in helping Twin Cities Habitat preserve affordable homeownership in the community. Each year, over 30,000 volunteers assist Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity build and rehab homes for well deserving families.

Not only does a Habitat assignment make for a great birthday party, it is also a wonderful way to commemorate graduation, anniversaries, and other important life milestones.  To explore group volunteer opportunities like the one Judy organized, contact Riley Moynihan at (612) 305-7116 or e-mail riley.moynihan@tchabitat.org
