Habitat says farewell to one of its longest serving volunteers

Volunteering with Habitat for 22 years requires dedication and commitment. You become a familiar face to many of our site staff and fellow volunteers, and play an important role in transforming the lives of countless Habitat families. You gather new friends, experiences and skills along the way. These and many other things come to mind when describing one of Habitat’s longest running volunteers: Kenny. 

Kenny started volunteering with Habitat in August of 1991. Kenny’s wife Helen heard about Habitat through a friend; they thought it would be great for Kenny, because he was a recently retired builder. It turned out to be a perfect fit – Kenny was able to continue his passion for being on construction sites, and Habitat gained one of its most long-term volunteers. He became part of the Dakota Regular Crew and volunteered one to two days a week. Eventually, he became coordinator for the crew – tracking the hours that each member was on site and what homes the crew worked on each year.  22 years and 228 homes/sites later, one can surely say that Kenny has made a huge impact on the staff and volunteers that have had the privilege to work with him over the years.

Kenny decided that it was time to hang up his tool belt and retire from Habitat. We want to express our gratitude and thanks for all that he has done for the organization. As one site supervisor said, “Kenny has made a generational impact. The people he helped by working on those homes will feel the impact for generations to come.” For all the hours, years, and countless miles you drove to get to site each week, we thank you Kenny.
