Supporters of Twin Cities Habitat Women Build gathered this muddy Monday morning to raise the first wall on the program’s 18th metro home and kick-off this year’s Women Build Season. See highlights from the speakers and video of the wall raising below.
The event was on Newton Avenue North in Minneapolis, at the future home of Habitat partner Muna Haji. During a short program before the wall-raising, attendees heard from Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity President Susan Haigh, District 58 Senator Linda Higgins, and the manager of the Lowe’s Maple Grove store, Tom Cramer.
Women Build Co-Chair and Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Allyson Knudsen and Site Supervisor Terra Lumley also spoke.
“Building this foundation is so critical to all of us,” Knudsen said. “Congratulations to all of you for being here. You’re making a difference and you do it one home at a time.”
Lumley recalled a volunteer asking her why the Women Build program was started.
“The first reason is to celebrate the women dedicated to our mission. I would guess about half the volunteers on all our sites our women. And the second reason is because we can!” yelled Lumley.
Women Builders will construct two homes this year. The program is sponsored by Wells Fargo, the Joyful Women Fund and the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation.
