More than three dozen business executives and civic leaders volunteered on a Habitat townhome project in Northeast Minneapolis on October 10. They split into three groups to frame garages, put up sheetrock and paint at the 3rd Avenue Townhomes. See all the pictures here on flickr.
The CEOs worked alongside Habitat homebuyers and heard from one of them during lunch. "Owning a home is part of the American dream," said Ahmed Gedi who is buying one of the 3rd Avenue units with his wife. "Next year I will buy a home, my son will graduate from high school and I will finish my bachelor's degree."
Both of the co-chairs of the CEO Build, Richard Davis, CEO of U.S. Bancorp, and Doug Baker, CEO of Ecolab, said Amhed's family story is what Habitat is all about. Davis told his fellow executives to give their employees every opportunity to volunteer with Habitat.
Businesses often help sponsor Habitat homes and supply volunteers for "work camp weeks" throughout the summer. Some companies will have employees volunteering nearly all summer long on site with Habitat.
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis City Councilwoman Diane Hofstede both attended the event. They are each great supporters of Habitat's work.
This was the tenth annual CEO Build for Twin Cities Habitat and its largest yet. Susan Haigh, President and CEO of Twin Cities Habitat, told the group plans are already in the works for next year's CEO Build.
