On June 27th, Living Lord Lutheran Church youth group of Bartlett, Illinois joined us at the ReStore in New Brighton, MN. The group had several teams join us earlier in the week on Monday and Wednesday to help with various tasks around the store. The volunteers worked on organizing cabinetry around the store, as well as moving lumber and other materials. Grant, who works at ReStore said, “Working by yourself just isn’t as fun, plus more gets done when we have volunteers!”
The youth group from Living Lord came up to Minnesota for a mission trip. The theme of their trip is “Home”, and is about the world being their temporary home and looking forward to their heavenly home. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity fit in perfectly with their theme, as our mission is to eliminate poverty housing and to make decent, affordable shelter for all people a matter of conscience. The students have watched the movie “Field of Dreams” in preparation for their mission and have watched clips each night of this week-long trip to help them learn more about their “Home” theme. The students even drove to the filming location of the Field of Dream in Iowa on their way up to the Twin Cities to add to their learning experience!
In addition to their volunteer work at ReStore this week, the youth group has volunteered at Hearts & Hammers doing lawn work and other projects. Outside of volunteering, the team went to a Twins game and visited Minnehaha Falls as part of their evening activities. The students will be packing up their belongings and heading back to Illinois on Saturday, June 28.
The students said they really enjoyed volunteering in the Twin Cities and learning about their theme “Home”. Having help keeping ReStore clean and organized makes it easier for shoppers to find the materials they need for their projects. This in turn helps Habitat continue to pursue their mission in the Twin Cities and beyond.
