2010 Women Build Initiative Kicks-Off in North Minneapolis

First-of-its-kind rehab project marks new meaning for annual effort

JUNE 7, 2010 - MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Redefining the phrase "break a nail," several hundred women will descend on a North Minneapolis home during the coming summer months, power tools and sledgehammers in hand, as part of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build™ project.

The project marks a “first-of-its-kind” rehab opportunity for Women Build™ volunteers, highlighting the need to rebuild communities heavily hit by the foreclosure crisis. The new focus is one which coincides with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s ongoing strategy to revitalize neighborhoods and stabilize homeownership in foreclosure-impacted areas. Community organizations, city governments and neighborhood groups continue to play a pivotal role in current remediation efforts.

A brief event celebrating the kick-off of the project will take place at the Women Build™ 2010 home on Monday, June 7, from 9:00 – 10:00 am in North Minneapolis. The event is open to the public and guests are encouraged to arrive at 8:45 am. Featured speakers include Susan Haigh, president of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity; Council President Barb Johnson; State Representative Erin Murphy and Bonnie Kalen, Vice President, Wells Fargo and Women Build™ 2010 Committee Chair.

Women Build™ is a program of Habitat for Humanity International that encourages women from all walks of life to have fun, develop new skills and help transform communities by building decent, safe and affordable homes for hard-working low-income families. The 2010 project marks the 14th home to be completed by groups of Twin Cities’ women volunteers since the local program’s inception in 1992.

Funding for the Twin Cities’ Women Build™ 2010 home is provided by women-led businesses and foundations, public companies and donations from individual women. Lowe’s is the national sponsor of Women Build™. Lead sponsors for the project include Wells Fargo, the Joyful Women Fund and the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation.
