AmeriCorps Questions
What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps, a federal agency, brings people together to tackle the country’s most pressing challenges through national service and volunteering. Since the first AmeriCorps member was sworn in on September 12, 1994, Habitat for Humanity affiliates have hosted AmeriCorps members to engage community volunteers and build, rehab, and repair affordable housing.
Are AmeriCorps positions jobs?
AmeriCorps positions are referred to as terms of service. During your term, you will have the chance to build professional skills and engage with the community.
Are the positions paid?
Members receive a living allowance to help support accommodation and other living expenses. Those serving full-year terms in 2023-2024 will receive a bi-weekly living allowance totaling $25,500 over the course of the service year. AmeriCorps members also receive an Education Award upon successful completion of their term of service; for the 2023-2024 full year, the award is $6,895.
Is there other support available for AmeriCorps members?
Twin Cities Habitat offers a boot/clothing/tool allowance, a cell phone allowance, and medical reimbursement for all members, both summer and year-long. Most AmeriCorps members are eligible for EBT and reduced transit fares; most of our members do choose to apply. We also provide free health insurance to AmeriCorps members, and some members qualify for childcare reimbursement.
Can I have a part-time job?
You need to commit to completing the hours required for your service term, but we do have members who hold part-time jobs or attend classes during evenings/weekends. As part of your service agreement, you’ll need to prioritize your AmeriCorps service requirements. Some positions require occasional work outside of the regular hours, so you would just need to communicate with other supervisors ahead of time.
What if I can’t commit to the full term or am looking for something to do over summer?
We offer summer AmeriCorps terms! These positions all serve out in the field and we have 10 to 15 summer members join the full-year members each summer. We also have flexible options in the form of part-time and half-term roles.
Is there any time off during the term of service?
Yes, there is time built in for holidays, personal time off, and sick leave. For the full-year term, this works out to be approximately four weeks throughout the year.
What do members do after their service term?
A lot of folks go on to complete a higher-ed degree or search for a job. At Twin Cities Habitat, 30% of our staff served in AmeriCorps, so it’s an excellent way to get your foot in the door if you’re keen to work at Habitat! Serving in AmeriCorps is particularly helpful if someone is interested in government or nonprofit work in the future. In our program, members learn handy construction skills that will serve them well if they choose to pursue a career in carpentry or construction!

AmeriCorps Service at Twin Cities Habitat
What is a typical day like?
AmeriCorps site members are paired and work directly with a site supervisor, who sets the tasks for the day. Typical days start between 7:30-8:30 am and run until 3:30-4:30 pm, depending on the day and work that needs to be done. Every day can differ, based on factors such as if volunteers are on site and what needs to be completed that day. Check out our "a day in the life" page for more >
Do I need to have construction experience?
No! While previous construction experience is helpful, it is not required. All members are given specialized training to learn construction skills.
What if I don’t have a car?
We have a limited number of Habitat for Humanity trucks that are distributed among On Site Volunteer Coordinators to be used during their term of service. Outside of service hours, AmeriCorps members can use Twin Cities Metro Transit (public transportation) at a discounted rate by applying once they’ve received EBT.
What do AmeriCorps members do in the winter?
While the winter months are much slower than the summer, AmeriCorps members and their supervisors still work in the field. All exterior work is generally completed in the fall so members can focus on the interior. There are trainings and teambuilding events on some Wednesdays during the winter.
What does the service year include?
During your service year, you’ll have a chance to volunteer at other organizations in the Twin Cities and spend time getting to know your cohort through monthly Corps Days. Most years, we also have a fall retreat and a spring service trip, both free of cost to members.
Who would I be serving with?
Our AmeriCorps members engage with a wide variety of people, including construction site supervisors, volunteers, homebuyers, and Habitat office staff. Our AmeriCorps members also come from all over the country. If you enjoy meeting new people, AmeriCorps might be a great fit!
How many AmeriCorps members serve with TCHFH each year?
Typically, there are between 25-30 AmeriCorps members serving throughout the year.
Where are most of the sites located?
We operate in the Twin Cities seven-county metro area. Approximately half of our sites are located in Minneapolis or St. Paul. Other sites are located in surrounding suburbs (e.g. St. Paul Park, Roseville, Chaska, Prior Lake).
How can I learn more about the AmeriCorps experience?
You can check out AmeriCorps stories on our blog, follow us on Instagram, or get connected with a current Twin Cities Habitat AmeriCorps member. Just email americorpsprogram@tchabitat.org to be connected to an AmeriCorps member.

Meet Our Program Manager!
Hi all! My name is Lauren Budge, and I am excited you have found your way to the Twin Cities Habitat AmeriCorps page! As the National Service Program Manager, I have the pleasure of working with our AmeriCorps members from onboarding through their very last day of service.
A little bit about me; I am an AmeriCorps Alum (NCCC FEMA Corps), novice homeowner who is attempting to update the kitchen and create a pollinator pit stop out of a tiny yard, travel as much as possible, try new cuisines and breweries, experiment in art, and get off the grid with my husband to my family’s remote northern cabin. And I couldn’t forget to mention, my two black cats, Yami and Mochi (feel free to send me all your cat pictures). Reach out with all your AmeriCorps questions and I would love to set up a time to connect.
